"Did we get everyone out?"
Ainn's voice paused. "We lost Tau. Injuries were sustained all around."
Each Soldier was monitored closely when they were in the field, but there was always the possibility of equipment failure. Ainn's confirmation only validated what was displayed in front of them.
Amalthea's voice was sad. "You all fought well. We were strong. Against the best, we succeeded in our mission."
"Thank you, Rishi." Ainn's comm channel closed.
Phecda watched Amalthea's face, judged the truth of the feeling saturating her response. What she saw there convinced her of its validity. Affection had always been a part of Amalthea's personality, but after so long, Phecda was surprised to see it still held a place so close to the surface. Too many of them had forgotten who they were and hid behind masks they'd perfected over so much time. She wondered if any remembered their roots. She even wondered it of herself.
The Keeper of Secrets made a mental note not to stay away so long. Personal visits could be useful for other kinds of intel.
"How many of Han's are down?" Phecda stepped back to Amalthea's side after checking over the equipment she'd loaned to get the satellite surveillance up and running.
Amalthea repeated the question, so the VI would respond, "DORTHY? How many enemy units are down?"
"My estimation is eight, Rishi," the computerized voice was loud in the quiet aftermath of the chaos.
"It seemed we were able to get Dee out too easily." Amalthea's voice was quiet, contemplative.
The computer continued its assessment. "The enemy seemed unwilling to risk harm to the target. They only engaged at a distance, enabling your units to keep them away. The reinforcing caravan was able to pick up the first team with little difficulty."
Phecda nodded. "They didn't push their perimeter. They weren't expecting such a defensive force.â
"A mistake I'm sure Han won't make again."
"Han," Phecda whispered the name as if speaking it for the first time. It'd been so long since the name attached to The Ophiuchus' title had been uttered so brazenly.
"That is his name." Amalthea's voice was laced with annoyance.
Phecda nodded, tilting her head as she filed this information away. Was the human platitude time heals all relevant even for them?
Looking back at the monitors showed vehicles leaving the battle zone with the asset secured. Phecda contemplated what other things this new revelation might breed among the Houses, and how she might anticipate them so her market would be full when the time came.
